Carrick gets his answer: Bruno's hat-trick sinks Ipswich 5-2
Carrick spent the week insisting he was 'not calm'. His players answered with a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick in a 5-2 rout of Ipswich, though the defence that lost at Hull hasn't gone anywhere.

Michael Carrick spent his week insisting he was “not calm” and snapping at journalists who dared ask why United had lost at Hull. On Saturday his players handed him the only reply that actually shuts a press room up: five goals, a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick, and promoted Ipswich swept aside 5-2. The response was emphatic. It was also, if you squint past the confetti, exactly as leaky at the back as the afternoon that started all the fuss.
The captain dragged them out of it
This was Bruno Fernandes’ game and everyone else’s cameo. Ipswich actually led, Leif Davis volleying them in front on 29 minutes, before the captain levelled six minutes later and then, once United found their range, ran the show: a deflected own goal, a penalty, and a third off Mbeumo to seal the hat-trick, with Mbeumo himself adding a fifth. A first win of the season, delivered by the one man Old Trafford could least afford to lose. Carrick wanted a reaction; his skipper wrote it in capital letters.
What you won’t get on the teamsheet
Here’s the part Carrick won’t enjoy being reminded of. All week he’d been prickly: “you’ve watched football a long time, right?” he’d fired at a reporter who suggested his side lacked bite. Fair enough, Michael: we watched, and we saw five goals. We also watched Luke Shaw get glided past by Fatawu for the opener (one analyst reckons “his legs have gone”) and watched Lisandro Martínez try a Cruyff turn in his own box before gifting Ipswich a second. You’ve watched football a long time too. You know a back four that ships two to a newly-promoted side hasn’t fixed anything; it’s just outscored the problem for a week.
A Bruno hat-trick papered over the exact soft centre that lost at Hull: five scored, two conceded to a team that was in the Championship in May.
One good week doesn’t rebuild a wall
The numbers behind the party are grim: three clean sheets in their last 13 league games, Sesko still short of fitness, and Cunha as a false nine leaving crosses to find nobody. None of it mattered here because Fernandes was unplayable, but Fernandes cannot be unplayable every week, and the next side to visit won’t have been promoted in May. Carrick got his win, his headline and a rare bit of peace. He did not get a defence.
So yes: “not calm” Carrick can finally breathe. For a week. He answered the critics the only way that counts, 5-2, with his captain magnificent. Just don’t ask him to watch the two goals back. He’s watched football a long time. He knows exactly what he saw.
